Should you get clear braces in Birmingham?

If you’re considering getting braces in adulthood, you’re far from alone. Orthodontic treatment is now more popular among adults than ever; and many of our patients here at St. Paul’s Square Dental in Birmingham have been delighted with the results of getting this kind of work done later in life.

If you are thinking about getting your teeth straightened, one of your foremost concerns might be about feeling self-conscious during treatment. If this is the case, it is well worth finding out about your options when it comes to clear braces in Birmingham. We have compiled this guide to give you a good idea of what both kinds of hardware involved, so read on to find out more.

What are clear braces?

Clear braces in Birmingham are very similar to the traditional style metal braces that most people associate with orthodontic treatment. The big difference is that they are held together with clear brackets, and can also include wires that match the colour of the teeth. Although they are not invisible, they are barely noticeable – and this makes them a popular choice with adult patients.

How do they work?

Just like traditional braces, the clear ones are manipulated by us to pull the teeth into position. The advantage is that they are much less noticeable; but they remain just as effective for treating a wide range of orthodontic issues. Treatment with this style of braces usually takes a few months longer than it does with invisible ones; however, the results are usually well worth a little patience.

What are invisible braces?

Invisible braces differ from clear ones in that, rather than being composed of wires, they are made up of specifically designed aligners that are placed over the teeth. These are also popular with many of our patients who are looking for discretion when it comes to getting their teeth straightened.

How do they work?

Clear aligners work in a different way to traditional styles of braces. They are composed of clear plastic that is created to match the individual patient. This occurs after the dentist has taken impressions of the teeth so that they aligners fit perfectly. The set of aligners is usually worn for a period of around two weeks; after which we give you a new set to wear and so on. The teeth are gradually moved into a better position over the course of the treatment.

How do you know which is the best option?

Your suitability for either of these kinds of braces is entirely dependent on your case as an individual. Patients who require a minimum of correction may be more suitable candidates for invisible braces.

Those whose teeth are extremely misaligned may be in need of the clear braces, which use the traditional wire and bracket system and are proven to be very effective at moving the teeth into a more desirable position.
