6 Month Smile - FAQ
Can teeth really be straightened in just 6 months with "6 month smile"?
Yes. The treatment focuses on the front 6-8 teeth that are visible when you smile and involves having barely visible, teeth-coloured, special nickel titanium wires and brackets fixed to the teeth. Therefore it is a quicker procedure than more traditional orthodontic treatments which focus on all the teeth. For some patients, treatment can be complete in 4 months, however for others, it can take a little longer than 6 months, up to 9 months at the most.
Who is suitable for the treatment?
Most people are suitable for the treatment, provided you are 15 years old or over, have orthodontic problems with the front 6-8 teeth such as crooked teeth or gaps between your teeth, and don't require any adjustment to your bite.
How often do I need to visit the dentist during my treatment?
Regular check-ups will be required, approximately every 5-6 weeks as your teeth will move quite rapidly over the first few months of treatment. During your check-ups, the braces will be adjusted and if necessary, interproximal reduction (IPR) to remove a small amount of enamel between 2 touching teeth to make adequate space for teeth movement will be carried out.
Are '6 month smile' braces more comfortable than regular braces?
Yes they are. The technique moves teeth with low force which is more comfortable than with regular braces. It still utilises the same orthodontic principles as with regular braces, however the aim is to improve the cosmetic appearance of the teeth and does not work on the position of your bite. Initially, when the braces are fixed onto the teeth and each time there is any tightening required, there is mild discomfort, however, once the teeth become accustomed, this should subside
Are the teeth, gums or roots damaged by the braces?
As the technique moves teeth with lighter force and there is seldom need for tooth extraction, there are fewer risks involved with "6 month Smiles" orthodontics than with traditional orthodontics.
After the treatment with the "6 month smile" braces, is there a need to wear retainers?
Yes, in order to maintain the straighter position of the teeth after removal of the 6 month braces there is the need to wear retainers, as with other traditional orthodontic treatments. If you would prefer not to wear a removable retainer, there are other options available that may suit your needs such as having a bonded retainer.
What is the cost of treatment?
The cost varies from patient to patient based on the severity of the orthodontic problems, however the "6 month braces" treatment works out to be cheaper than traditional braces as fewer dentist visits are required.
